MARGARET ELLIS HILL

Renewal

The almond tree’s branches have burst white flags
to catch us unawares. Before summer last year, these trees
leaned back into ordinary while the greens of birch,
mulberries and oaks summered on center stage,
made curtain calls that colored autumn.

But while days slipped into paler colors,
winter’s sun slanted into fewer hours of light until
the deep silence held the only sound, leaf falling on leaf,
almonds gathered their banners into soft buds,
ready to unfurl and wave us into spring again.
