Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 people in the United States. For people with the disease, a defective gene causes the body to produce a faulty protein that leads to abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and can result in fatal lung infections.
Is there a cure for Cystic Fibrosis? No, not yet. Cystic Fibrosis is a life shortening condition and in the past most children with Cystic Fibrosis did not survive childhood. However, today with improved treatment most people with Cystic Fibrosis are living into adulthood and leading normal and productive lives. At present there are promising research developments in the area of gene therapy. At present there is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis and treatment is therefore aimed at slowing progression of the condition. The average age now is 33 years but not so long ago that was teenage years or younger. The great improvement has been brought about by research.
How do we help? Iota Delta Sorority is committed to helping find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Each fall semester we put on our annual "Bowl for Breath" where we invite both the La Verne and ULV community to join us at the local bowling alley in our efforts to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. In the spring we participate in the annual Great Strides cystic fibrosis walk as well as visit and play with children who live with the disease.
What is 65 Roses? 65 Roses is what some children with Cystic Fibrosis call their disease because the words are much easier for them to pronounce. Since 1965, the term "65 Roses" has been used by children of all ages to describe their disease. But, making it easier to say, does not make Cystic Fibrosis any easier to live with. The "65 Roses" story has captured the hearts and emotions of all who have heard it. The rose, appropriately the ancient symbol of love, has become a symbol of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
In fall 2006, Iota Delta raised over $2,000 at their annual Bowl for Breath. Iota Delta worked with various clubs, campus departments, and organizations to increase the support within the ULV community.
