Membership to Psychology Club and Psi Chi

Becoming a Psychology Club Member

We encourage all students at ULV who are interested in psychology to join the Psychology Club.  This club is part of Psi Chi, but there are no GPA requirements and requires only a $20 for semester dues.  We ask that you pay this as soon a possible to the chapter treasurer, vice-president, or advisors to be included on our rosters and in our events. There are no application forms but we ask that you e-mail us (include your name, address, e-mail, and contact phone) so that we can have your information for our records.

Participating in weekly meetings, contributing to our food and troop donation drives, helping with campus activities (homecoming, Stress Free  Zone, sport matches, etc.), or supporting our fundraising efforts for conferences and events will help us to build a stronger student club. Therefore, we ask that all Psychology Club members take part in making our club a powerful social, academic, and career resource for students.

Referenced from our Psi Chi National website: "Becoming a member"

Membership in Psi Chi is open to those who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who are students or faculty members in an institution where a chapter is located (if your school does not have a Psi Chi chapter, have you considered starting a chapter?). Both undergraduate and graduate students who have registered for major or minor standing in psychology or for a program psychological in nature may be eligible for membership if other requirements are fulfilled.

Eligibility for undergraduates includes:

  • Completion of 3 semesters or 5 quarters of the college course
  • Completion of 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses
  • Ranking in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in both psychology classes and in cumulative grades

Eligibility for graduate students includes:

  • Minimum overall cumulative average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all graduate courses

Students and faculty are elected to membership by the chapter at the institution, according to the provisions in the national Psi Chi Constitution (PDF file). Any chapter, at its discretion, may establish higher academic standards for eligibility, but may not require service standards for eligibility. Membership in Psi Chi is open to qualified candidates of any age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, and national and ethnic origin.

You can download the application form here. Applications are due at the beginning of each Spring Semester so please contact us for specific deadlines..

Benefits of  National Membership

The intrinsic value of membership is rewarding to the achiever in that recognition of excellence leads to self-fulfillment and thus to self-realization. By recognizing that what you do does make a difference, you are stimulated to higher productivity. Accomplishments are enjoyed more when shared with others. Furthermore, the contacts made through Psi Chi will be valuable throughout your educational and professional careers.

Concrete advantages of membership include:

  • The documents a membership certificate and card which give tangible evidence of membership.
  • The references provided throughout one's lifetime (this service alone is worth the investment).
  • The experience gained by working with Psi Chi is excellent for building up a resume; it is difficult to attain that first managerial and creative experience.
  • Psi Chi is a springboard for professional growth. Opportunities are made available to the members for promoting their research, receiving national and international recognition, meeting and interacting with leaders in their field, and meeting Psi Chi members of other chapters who also will be future leaders.
  • The United States government recognizes membership in Psi Chi as meeting one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in the Federal service.

Benefits of Joining ULV's Psi Chi Chapter

For participating in Psi Chi activities, our chapter will purchase a Graduation Stole for members who complete at least 20 hours of participation in the semester that they wish to obtain the stole. Psi Chi members must be inducted by the time they receive the stole and only one stole will be purchased for a member who qualifies. Participation guidelines are as follows:

  • 20 Hours of Participation can be achieved by:

  • 1 hour for each meeting attended

  • Troop Packages: Maximum is 2 hours if you give donations

  • Psychology Awareness Week: Maximum of 2 hours if you help make flyers or posters

  • Fall Induction: Maximum of 2 hours if you help with the preparation and planning.

  • Rock Painting: Maximum of 2 hours if you help paint the rock

  • Fundraising: Maximum of 2 hours if you help with selling items, participating in TV tapings, or soliciting donations

  • University sponsored events (Homecoming, Commuter Fair Day, etc.): Maximum of 2 hours if you help with booth decorations and hosting the booth
